MAXIMIZE YOUR GMAT SCORE WITH THE RIGHT STRATEGY

Approaching any exam with brute force strategy will get you nowhere. In order to maximize your potential, it is important to have a plan of attack. The Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT is a computer-based exam conducted in English intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills. Since the exam is divided into sections, it is important to understand individual strengths and weaknesses. You might find you’re good at certain kinds of problems, and thus, it is important to devote time to areas you find difficult.

The GMAT is not looking for the number crunchers or grammar Nazis; it is looking for candidates who can succeed in a business-oriented study program. People, who can interpret, distill, manage, and simplify complex, loose data and transform it into usable information to make decisions and solve problems. Simple memorizing information will not help in achieving great results.

Here are some strategies that might help you in your quest to develop the right way to think:

Always look at the answer choices before attempting the problem

Most people go through the problem first and then look at the answer choices. By doing so, candidates often ignore the subtle hints the choices provide. By realising what is needed for the answer, plenty time can be saved. For example, if the question asks you to multiply multiple integers and you spend minutes only to find that the answer choices are in the form of exponents, then you would have wasted precious time.

Look for the con

You might be very familiar with mathematical concepts, but it is of little use if little details and assumptions fool you. The calculations in themselves are not very hard, but the GMAT often obscures information or tries to hide it. Other times, the test will embed information in one statement in the other statement; fooling you into thinking you need both statements when one of them is sufficient alone. Thus, always double-check your answer with all the possible choices to see whether you are marking the correct answer.

Read with pauses

Looking at the questions and skimming through the passages in order to look for the answer is the wrong approach that many candidates take. Not only does this method require you to re-read information, but many questions cannot be answered without an understanding of the whole passage. Therefore, it is important to go through the passage first, while looking for elements that bring a pause to the structure, tone, organization, and main point. This presents a clearer understanding of the passed from the very first read through.
